Programs / Workshops
ALSO offers a variety of ongoing programs, workshops, and activities!
Diversity Training and GLBTQ Youth "Speak Outs"
We offer free diversity trainings and GLBTQ youth "Speak Outs" for trained professionals, educators, and groups that are interested in the topics of diversity, inclusion, GLBTQ topics, and Queer Studies. Several ALSO youth have been trained to facilitate workshops on specific topics, and our staff is highly knowledgable and motivated. Please remember that our schedule requires several weeks notice to prepare tailor-made material and/or create workshops that are specifically requested, but we are happy to create them!
Community Service
Youth at ALSO are expected to become leaders and serve as examples to the rest of the GLBTQ youth community in our area. As such, youth are encouraged to give back to the community in whatever ways they can. Community service and volunteerism keeps us connected to our neighbors and allies, and so we expect youth to take part in our projects as often as possible. Throughout the year, projects and opportunities are listed on our calendar and on our home page. Keep checking back to see how you can make a difference!
Diversity Club / GSA Promotion
Inclusion, diversity, and tolerance are some of our top priorities at ALSO, and we work hard to make Southwest Florida schools as welcoming and tolerant as we can. Schools are required by law to allow student groups to form and hold meetings on campus, and that includes GLBTQ students, and groups they may want to form.
ALSO can help you start a Diversity club or Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) at your school, but you must find a teacher/faculty sponsor first! Once you have a sponsor and permission from your school's administration, contact us and we'll walk you through the process of starting your club. If you have any problems finding a sponsor or seeking approval from your schools' administration, please contact us and we'll help in whatever way we can!
Letter-Writing Campaign
ALSO has been working hard to contact GLBTQ celebrities, politicians, and community leaders! Reaching out and putting a face and name to the countless GLBTQ youth who walk through our doors makes a real difference. Help us make a difference by writing a letter to a celebrity, politicians, or community leader! This campaign is targeted specifically at people who can make a difference, and we ask that you participate directly with ALSO before submitting any letters, and that your final draft be approved by staff.
